A device VPN app protects the device it runs on. A router-level VPN protects everything that connects through that router — including devices that can't run a VPN app at all.

What each approach actually covers

A device app like GhostMesh for Windows or Android only protects traffic from that one device, but it's easy to install, easy to toggle per-app, and doesn't depend on your router's capabilities.

A router-level VPN covers every device on that network by default, including smart TVs, consoles, and IoT devices that have no VPN app of their own to install.

Where a router VPN wins
